BBQ Q&A -- WHAT IS BETTER? CHARCOAL, OR GAS?

Q:
What is better -- Charcoal, or Gas?

A:
Phew, now there is an enernal argument in the BBQ and grilling world. There are pro's and con's to both.

GAS GRILLS

THE PROS
Versatility: The biggest advantage of using a gas grill is it's versatility. Whether you live in snow-capped mountains, or sunny Southern California, your gas grill can easily be used year-round. Consider it an extension ofyour kitchen.

Speed: Gas grills heat up quickly so you can in fact start grilling within 10 to 15 minutes. This means you can use it as a regular cooking device, rather than making it just a weekend activity.

Ease of use: Simple press a button or turn a valve to switch on or off.

Temperature control: Turn the grill knob for your desired temperature (high, medium, low)

Ease of cleaning: Charred residue on your grill grates can easily be brushed off. Plus, you don't have to get rid of all the charcoal afterwards. Blasting your grill to a high heat before cleaning helps the removal of residue. Read this article for more on cleaning your gas grill.

THE CONS
Cost:
Gas Grills definitely cost more than charcoal grills.

Maintenance: Cleanup is easy, but gas grills require more maintenace, because they have more bits & pieces to take care of.

CHARCOAL GRILLS

THE PROS
Flavor:
Charcoal grills do offer a more smokey flavor. You can add smoke packets to your gas grill to get a similar flavor.

Heat: Charcoal grills can get even higher than gas grills, and for those folks who want to have that perfect sear on a rare steak, the level of heat for some is essential. Plus, charcoal offers a very low and slow approach to cooking for slow-cooked pieces of meat. Remember, that running a gas grill for a long period of time (even though it's on low) can become costly.

Cost: Charcoal grills are generally cheaper than gas grills of comparable size and quality.

THE CONS
Time: Charcoal grills require at least 20 minutes to heat up, and properly preparing the coals often can take longer.

Cleaning: Charcoal grilling can be a messy business.

Temperature: Unless you're a complete pro, it can be difficult to manage the temperature on a charchoal grill. Try setting up hot and cool spots to help you along.

Seasonality: The prep time of a charcoal grill isn't always fun in wet, or snowy weather.
